2021 March Latest News

Gary Piper's Workshop preparing 1011 for renovation. Progress of the work can be followed by watching videos on Facebook under Unicorn Catamaran Association

This is the first News Letter in 2021 and the Committee send their greetings and best wishes to all members and interested fellow sailors for a healthy and happy year. We have all been on lockdown due to the CORVID 19 virus which has provided an opportunity to catchup on both household and boat maintenance. Both Gary Piper and Will Stefanou have been practicing their woodworking skills by removing the decks from older stressed plywood built Unicorns, checking the soundness of the interior and exterior of the hulls, then installing new decks. When painted and varnished they look and are like new. Inspection of the beams and mast to ensure they are sound, then replace the standing rigging and check all the other fittings are in good condition. You then have a very competitive boat for a fraction of the price of a new boat. The Unicorn was designed to be built at home by sailors with some woodworking experience. For those with no woodworking skills then the purchase of a Condor built foam sandwich hull boat can achieve a similar result with basic glass fiber repair skills.  Most people can carry out the renovation of an older boat which can be purchased for between £1000 and £2000. Purchasing an older boat also allows new Unicorn sailors to get on the water and experience the adrenaline rush of single handed helm catamaran sailing for a season, before starting the renovation over the following Winter.

At Stone S C there are plans to start the 2021 Season over the Easter weekend with limited onshore facilities to meet the current Government guidelines for Corvid 19. It is hoped that if all goes to plan in controlling the virus the Club will be operating normal racing and Open events by the end of May. I do not have any reports from other Clubs, but hopefully they are planning similar timing to try and get back to a more normal sailing year. As the Government plan rolls out it will become clearer what traveler trophy events can be held and also the venue and timing of the National championships. This will be advised to you as soon as the Committee feel confident that the events can be held. In the meantime have your virus vaccination and keep safe and healthy. If you have any news about yourself or your Club then please share them with your Committee and other members. This web site has a for sale section which is free to advertise your boat or spare parts.
